I had trouble following the organization of the book. I really couldn't tell you what the perceived problems or solutions were and how they mapped to each other. Also, I felt a lot of it wasn't well-supported with research--it was just a lot of opinion.

I recommend this to anyone to anyone who wants a better understanding of the problems in higher education in the US, and especially to anyone who is working in higher education and wants to contribute to improving it. Succinct, inspiring book about public higher education. Should be required reading in state legislatures. As a public university president, I buy into this agenda.

One of the best summaries of the current state and likely direction of Higher Ed, and blessedly compact.

I would title this something like "Don't believe everything politicians and the press" tell you about higher education . . .I read this short book over the course of a weekend . . . lots and lots of data populate its pages; lots of references are cited; several specific recommendations offer . . . the primary one 'Higher education leadership, don't be afraid of taking a risk."

An excellent companion for any serious academic.

There is much I like about this book, and much I agree with. However, many of the ideas they espouse require widespread societal change that the skeptic in me is unsure we can ever achieve. Well worth reading, though, if you are in any way involved in higher ed.
