Freeman Is a fantastic historical writer. He has this way of turning things that we only know only a bit about into great stories. I have read this and his book on Julius Caesar and they are both excellent. I did like his book on Caesar even better but that's mainly because I find Caesar to be a much more compelling historical figure than Alexander. If you want to know about the life of either men, you can't do much better than Freeman. I know this has become such a tired cliche` but Freeman's books read like a GoT series book. I found myself staying up way later than I anticipated because I could't put the book down. One thing I will say about Freeman's style is that, whether he means to or not, he gives the people he writes about such personality. I feel like I know Alexander quite well after Freeman's book. This may not be the most scholarly work done on Alexander but its the most scholarly book that's also the most fun. If you searched for a book on Alexander, just go ahead and buy this one.

There are a number of exceptional histories and biographies of Alexander the Great and his times, but Philip Freeman’s is by far the most readable I’ve yet to come across. Although Robin Lane Fox has written a more detailed account, Freeman’s flows like a novel, and just like any great work of fiction it sweeps the reader along from chapter to chapter, leaving them wanting to know what happens next. Freeman evokes a true sense of what is was like to follow Alexander the Great on campaign, and spends just enough time on his parentage and formative years to lay a sound basis for his military adventures. Highly recommended.

I was looking for a readable, comprehensive re-telling of the story of Alexander the Great. Prof. Freemen delivered exactly that. The book reads quickly as Freemen avoids getting sidetracked in areas where the history is sketchy, subject to debate, or open reinterpretation. He acknowledges those issues where they appear, but keeps the story moving forward. It is rich with intrigue and wonder, as a 20 year old leads a disparate army, riven by internal feuds and ethnic animosity beyond their known world to establish, however briefly, a multi-cultural empire, in a region now wracked by war and desecration of cultural artifacts. Great story, well told.

My favorite reading genre is Biography and History. The only reason I bought this was because Alexander the Great kept popping up here and there in so many other books on history and famous people who made history. It wasn't until I read the notes in my NIV study Bible on Daniel's visions in chapters 7 & 8 and saw that Alexander the Great is identified as the goat in Daniel's vision of the Ram and the Goat. It was at that point that I decided I guess it's time I find out about Alexander the Great. Second only to Genghis Khan, Alexander was quite the conquerer. The author just presented the facts but, boy, was it ever an education for me on war and conquering kings. Alexander is the epitome of an unquenchable lust for conquering for his own name's sake. My personal conclusions were that nothing has changed since Cain slew Abel because Cain lusted after Abel's approval and wasn't willing to do what he needed to gain God's approval so he just slew his brother out of jealously. Simplistic? Look at every war in the history of mankind, the genesis of each has been to obtain what belongs to another. Alexander lied to his loyal men to keep them in sacrificial servitude fighting for MORE and for the glory of one man - Alexander the Great. This should be required reading in junior high schools across the country instead of other pieces of "literature." Teach our young people the true nature of man and the truth of war. Yes, once a war begins there are many opportunities for genuine greatness and self-sacrifice, but the author of war is pure evil and good men for good reasons are forced to respond to pure evil. On a positive note, a midst the brutal ugliness of this bio, I was amazed to learn the over-arching goodness and sovereignty of the God of the Bible. God "used" the evil caused by Alexander for good in that Alexander planted the Greek language throughout the lands he conquered. Rome planted roads, Alexander planted the language and both made it possible to further the Gospel of Christ throughout the entire regions surrounding the Mediterranean Sea.
