If you like Howl's Moving Castle then you will like this book. However, you provably won't like it as much as the first book. Nor will you provably like it as much as the second book. It's a well thought out piece, but it is lacking something critical: It spends WAY too much time away from Sophie and Howl! The last two books are told from different characters experience. Their thoughts, feelings, and perspectives take center stage. Which is fine except for the fact that they are not nearly as interesting as Sophie and Howl! You still get to see your favorite characters but they are not driving the plot as much as they should be. I want to see more of Sophie and Howl. Sadly, that looks like that will never happen . . .
Ok. I don't normally review books, but I'm reading this to my children, and if it were up to me I wouldn't bother to finish. We are about halfway finished and nothing has really happened besides two teenagers looking after a magical house and getting into very boring mishaps (i.e - water pipes leaking and needing spells to get rid of it, meeting a dangerous monster and miraculously getting away by mistake, the dog gets big and eats too much for like an hour or two, some kinds of gremlins that work in the garden and wanting additional pay, etc.) The main character got to work at a library for a day and met the main characters Howl and Sophie, very briefly and had tea. That's seriously all the action so far. My kids aren't really that interested as opposed to the first two books, and I'm having trouble keeping focused as well. If it were up to me there'd be much more action, and maybe some sort of spark or rivalry between Peter and Charmain... something. Instead, it feels like I'm watching two young teenagers bicker indifferently at each-other out of minor inconvenience and that's all this story has to offer.I'll keep on a few more chapters until the kids complain, but it's just awful.
Charmain Baker has been brought up perfectly respectably, without a hint of magic in her life. It's much to her surprise, then, when she is left in charge of her great-uncle William's house--since he is the Royal Wizard Norland and his house is as magical as he. She and Norland's new apprentice Peter become embroiled in a Royal mystery, make new friends, and see the end of old enemies.Jones is a fantastic writer, and this is a solidly written fantasy. The characters are well drawn, and the plot well written. It is humorous and entertaining, and while not perfect, a fun read, well recommended.Note: While it seems like a stand-alone novel at first, this is actually the third in the Wizard Howl series. Readers without the knowledge of the other two books will find themselves lost in certain situations.
To start off her main character is extremely whiny, it made me want to slap her. Also I'm not in love with twinkle I hated him because reading the baby talk irrated me. I'm thinking it was supposed to be cute but to me it became frustrating to read.I hated the way this one ended she needed to add a few more chapters to explain and give it more of a well though out ending. Not oh Charmaine is now a wizard and Peter is the next king the end no. She needed something more than that abrupt ending. But it's her style she did it with Howl's moving Castle as well and I did not enjoy it.Would I recommend this no, no I wouldn't. It was frustrating to read and quick to end without a good build up. It just ended.
The 3rd and final book in the Howl's Moving Castle trilogy is much better than the 2nd book (Castle in the Air), but still did not quite reach the greatness of the original. The new characters Charmain and Peter are good, but in the end, they seem like window dressing compared to the old standbys Howl, Sophie, and Calcifer (who you are probably reading the book for anyway). The plot of this book is certainly the most complex, but the antagonists, a group of purple creatures called Lobbucks, seem lackluster and kind of wimpy when compared to past villains of the series (Witch of the Waste and a Genie), but I think one of the on-going themes of Jones' books are the bad guys are mostly a lot of talk and rumors, and when confronted, they are not nearly as clever or powerful as you think. All in all, it was a good trilogy, but I think most people will be content just reading the first book and leaving it at that. Never-the-less, if You loved Howl's Moving Castle, and can't live life without a little more Howl and Sophie, then this is a pretty good book to read.
For a long time I preferred hard science fiction to fantasy. Dianne Wynne Jones managed to change my view of fantasy. This story is a follow on to Howl's Moving Castle. I shan't give you a synopsis of the work because I think that if you will buy this book and read it, you will understand. I will say this about it, it is a story about two teenagers growing each other up. The girl knows nothing about keeping house, but the boy knows a little and--well--I won't spoil the surprise for you. Just buy it and read it.
