I'm a veterinarian and I got this to convey basic anatomy to my clients. Not bad, I thought, as I thumbed through it.... until I realized the stomach is absent. There are skeletal features, the heart, liver, small intestines, but no stomach. This makes it pretty useless to use when explaining bloat, for example. This book is a great idea, and what there is is fairly accurate (more or less) but seriously, when you start omitting major organs the product goes from being useful to merely somewhat entertaining. This is a HUGE oversight and sort of kills the usefulness of the product. If you're the product designer and you're reading this, I applaud your efforts, but you may want to have a veterinarian check any revisions you make in the future before going into production.
We purchased this book and Uncover a Cat for our six year old granddaughter who would like to be a Veterinarian when she grows up. A few months ago when I asked her how school was going she was very discouraged because they were not teaching her anything she needed to know about animals and being a veterinarian. I went on to explain that everything she learns now will help her prepare for college where she will learn more about animals and their care. However, we decided to search for books that we could assist her with and she could keep as a reference and this along with Uncover a Cat are just wonderful. When she opened them at Christmas she was beyond excited. We picked a quiet time to read and review and as young as she is, she absolutely loved them and told me she would keep them in a special place so her little sister couldn't get at them. There are more books in the series and we will probably purchase them at a later date. Great find for any age capable of taking care of a fragile book!
The book itself is *really* cool. It's enlightening to flip through the layers and see how parts fit together. But the plastic parts are attached to the book in a very flimsy way, so it takes almost nothing to break them off, and thus our used book arrived with the digestive system missing completely and the skeletal system barely hanging on. I don't really blame the seller, it's not something a quick inspection would make obvious. But I'd suggest clamoring for a reprint then buying it new, if you can't buy a well-inspected copy.
My dog has some health issues and my daughter is very interested in what is going wrong under all that fur. He had a seizure last night and showing her how his brain is connected to the rest of his body was really helpful in explaining a complicated medical problem to a 5 year old.
My Daughter, 6 years old, loves this book. The stories and facts are enough to come back and review. There's not a tremendous amount of written information, this book mostly about the model dog; however, asking questions and discussion the topics on the page has made this become a regular favorite bedtime and rest time book for the past 6 months or so (so far). She's actually named the parts now and points them out when she sees other dogs in the neighborhood. She will tell dog owners when she pets their friendly dogs, "Ohhh I can feel his heart!" and "His lungs are really working!" Stuff like that makes me I got this book.
AWESOME book. My granddaughter who is 6 loves it. Her Daddy is a Vet,he was very impressed with the book.
Absolutely recommend to any child obsessed with dogs. My daughter wants to be vet some day and finds this book very interesting.
My 4.5 year old has been asking about how bodies work and asking for the names of muscles and bones. I bought uncover books, not sure if they'd be appropriate for her age. Although she isn't ready for all the text, she is very interested in the "layers" and is picking out things she wants to know the names of or how they work. These books are exactly what we need.
