About the Author
Geoffrey Wellum was born in Walthamstow. Aged seventeen, he joined the RAF on a short-service commission in August 1939 and served with 92 Squadron throughout the Battle of Britain. He is now one of the last surviving members of The Few. He is contacted regularly to make television and radio programmes.

For the sheer thrill of learning to fly look no further than this book. Geoffrey Wellum takes you into the cockpit with him and you share the joy, pain, and anxieties of mastering the intricacies of Tiger Moths, Harvards and Spitfires. Within ten months of leaving school he found himself embroiled in the Battle of Britain. He was seconded to 92 Fighter Squadron of the Royal Air Force stationed at Biggin Hill. This renowned outfit played a significant role in World War 11 and its illustrious pilots included Roger Bushell (Roger Bartlett in the movie“The great escapeâ€) and ‘Sailor’ Malan (RAF ace). The Squadron was later posted to Egypt thence to Malta, Sicily and finally to Italy. It claimed the highest number of fighter- aircraft victories of the war. Wellum survived two tours of operations including a hundred bomber escorts and numerous “dog†fights over occupied France. He is now well into his 90ties but like others of his generation he bemoans the fact that at 19 years of age he had reached the pinnacle of his life and by the time 92 Squadron was transferred to Malta he felt that he had been destroyed by the war and he grieved the loss of numerous pilot friends. How did he survive? Luck? I don’t think so, for although very modest, he displayed extraordinary skill in the air and was acutely aware of his surroundings during enemy contacts. This story, written in the first person, is a page-turner and you are the pilot author. It is a delight to read.
This is one of the finest first person narratives about combat flying I have ever read. The author has a great story to tell and relates it with real vividness. The people and the airplanes that fill this story are brought to life. His instructors, his squadron mates, and the aircraft they flew are captured very convincingly. Readers will feel that they have come to know both the men and the machines.In today's military, student pilots wouldn't be allowed near an airplane until completeing four years of college. It's remarkable to see what Geoffrey Wellum and his contemporaries did in their teens. Anyone wishing to know what it was like to fly a Spitfire in the Battle of Britain will find their curiousity satisfied by reading this outstanding book.Highly recommended.
As an insight into the mentality and motivations of a Bristish fighter pilot during the Battle of Britain and beyond this book is the pinnacle of the many titles I've read on the subject.Geoffrey's stream of consciousness style is insightful, honest and captivating.His recollections give a clear account of the day to day existence of those who fought and died. While these stories have been told many times before Wellum's honesty gives this reader a strong connection with the man and his motivations (and likely those of others)Wellum captures and contrasts the humour of the time with the cost of the stresses it masked.His descriptions of flight captures and conveys the joy and emotional connection of an aviator with this realm in a clear understated style that anyone who's ever flown can connect with.Combine this with his accounts of aerial battle the reader will finish wanting more.
You can almost smell the oil and gasoline, cough due to the black exhaust discharging from the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, and wince at the deafening sounds of the whirling propeller on the British Supermarine Spitfire as Geoff Willum takes you into the cockpit of his fighter aircraft to do battle with the "Hun" in airborne combat 20,000 feet in the air over southeastern England in the Battle of Britain. Willum was a high school student who joined the Royal Air Force as a naïve 17½ year old in March 1939 just months before the outbreak of war. His autobiography of the period between 1939 and 1942 called "First Light: The True Story of the Boy Who Became a Man in the War-Torn Skies Above Britain," is as smooth as a Spitfire's wing and as poignant as any you'll read from a participant in major air battles in war. Willum, one of "The Few" lionized by Winston Churchill as saving Britain, reminisces 35 years later about his thoughts, feelings, and observations as an experienced and full-fledged fighter pilot at 18 years old while he was fighting for his life in 350 mile-per-hour dogfights in the summer and fall of 1940 against the dreaded Luftwaffe's Messerschmitt 109s. He also vividly recounts his escorting of British bombers as they attacked the northwest coast of France in 1941 and describes his delivery of Spitfires to Malta in its rescue by the Allies and his escorting of bombers to Sicily in the summer of 1942. In Wellum's deft account, you'll experience an exciting and potentially fatal ride each time this RAF hero takes to the skies, and you'll soon recognize the debt of gratitude we must pay to him and his fighter pilots-in-arms for saving civilization--a distressing but ultimately inspiring book.
Amazing detailed description of flying a Spitfire during the first two years of the Battle of Britain, 1940 - 1942. Geoffrey Wellum, DFC, was a very talented pilot with amazing eyesight and reflexes. He survives and prospers through many sorties and dogfights with ME 109's. The level of writing and description brings the reader into the cockpit and up in the air with him.The Kindle content only allows one font, no bold, and no "time left in chapter", (only "time left in book").Highly recommend.
Great book, bought initially for research into my own novel, but i quickly warmed to the writers easy going style..He fought in the greatest battle for freedom ever in Europe, Facing odds of 4 to 1 ,these 18 year olds fought and died in the skies of britain and france. Many died usually horribly burned alive in their planes ,but still they went up day after day. This is by far the best narrative i have readn the Battle of Britain. Highly recommended.
