A very good treatment of what, for me, has been a very difficult subject. As a guitarist, I found the book to be useful only in conjunction with formal guitar training materials. I'm forging ahead without a teacher, and this book has been invaluable.One area where this book feels lacking, like the other theory books I tackled: They all chide you that you have to "learn your scales". How the hell am I supposed to do that? Rote memorization? Endless repetition of scales based on guitar scale patterns? Internalization of the step-step-half step sequence of the scales? I guess all of the above, but when do know when you're done? When you can verbalize the notes, play the notes, toggle from major to minor with ease, understand alternative minors? I'm still not sure I'm on the right track.

Helps to understand the roots.+Good book structure with lots of *notices, *jokes, *fun relaxing pictures and *"music pauses".+Not formal very casual way of explanations.+It's more *dialog form of interaction, that the reading.+This is one of the books that did not get me to go to sleep )+Places for exercises with pen or pencil in the book pages.===========CONS:-Not found yet===========EXCEPTIONS (for guitarists):-This is not the book that will teach you to read notes from the stuff fast (I bought this for it: "Guitar Reading Workbook,Barrett Tagliarino").-This will not teach your fingers to move in proper direction and on proper notes on the guitar (I bought "Guitar Aerobics: A 52-Week" for it).===========OVERALL:~ Like it a lot.

This book covers music theory that you can find in many forms online. However, what this book has that you won't find online is "why." The reason for the theory gives the book value that I have not seen elsewhere. Music theory without the "why" is nothing but names and rules. Why memorize all these concepts? You won't easily remember them without applying them and you can't apply them without knowing their purpose. Ed's book gives you that knowledge.I use the multitude of online resources to supplement this book to great effect.

I have tackled theory using several books; some quite brief and some that are many volumes. I have studied piano, guitar, and voice. (I don't claim to be a master of any of them, but I give it a good try.) While I had a fairly good understanding of BASIC theory before beginning Edly's book, his presentation and content really cleared up some of the "rough spots" in my understanding of some concepts.If you are a musician or a wannabe, and you want a simple exposure to the basics, this should be your first purchase. Frankly, I don't think it will be your last and ONLY purchase of theory material. However, I have never seen a better place to start. Be prepared to really think about what you are reading and truly study it and it will pay off.If you are just getting started studying theory, or some of the fundamental concepts are not quite clear, BUY THIS BOOK!RHB

This is a music theory book for musicians of all levels of proficiency. I upgraded from the second edition because I learned a fantastic amount from it. This third edition is slightly reorganized, and has some new elements of instruction. I play the classical guitar, and the book can readily be used for a 6 string instrument. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in music theory particularly jazz and modern music. The cartoons add to the joy of learning. They are fantastic. Buy it. You won't regret it!

This book is exposition of a seemingly difficult, but definitely complex subject. While presented in a wonderful, humorous manner, the ease of presentation belies the book's serious nature. Behind those funny words and humorous picture is a subject that requires your utmost attention. He's a superb teacher but don't be fooled. I've had to read the book or sections of the book several times to fully comprehend what he's trying to say. That's just the nature of music! And the author does understand music, its internal relationships and subtleties. Get it, enjoy it and be prepared to learn.

I've ready many music theory books, and this is the most accessible, comprehensive, and practical of them all. I've given countless copies away, and I use it in my teaching all the time. Highly recommended for anyone who wants to develop an understanding of how music works.

A little cutesy, but a great guide. I learned some of this stuff - sort of - as a kid. But I never took music lessons and never really understood even things as basic as chords. I haven't made it through the book yet, but it contains a lot of basic info as well as more in depth info.
