This book was a breath of fresh air, and I just absolutely loved it! It was funny, wonderfully written, and packed with inspiration. And I don't mean for kids, I mean for adults too. Even Marley's story is inspirational, and it was more so when I discovered in the book that she's the daughter of a PhD Sociology mom, and a real estate analytical geographer dad. I read this book and wanted to run out to change the world. My favorite quote in the book was this one:"My parents are always pushing me to do my best, even though my best may not look like other people's bests."I just don't think change is going to happen by beating it into people's minds with hammers. It's going to happen with the freshness that comes with finding passion, inspiration, and motivation in unexpected places. This book was fantastic, and it was all of those things. As a side note, I ended up buying the kindle version of this book, but I was in the local bookstore earlier, and the paper copy was just absolutely beautiful. Such wonderful photography, and colorful, glossy pages.Regardless of format though, I'd recommend it to everyone, adults and kids alike!
I liked that the author is so young and that at her age she decided to make a change in what she saw for the betterment for herself and others. She has become the catalist for every young person who reads this book. I will get as many of these books into the hands of children for their benefit, boys as well as girls. Great job Marley! Keep it coming!!!!
Saw this young lady on the view and I found her to be very inspirational. I had to purchase her book for my daughter.
My 10-year old African American daughter absolutely LOVES this book! She found it inspirational, funny and so easy to relate to. She did not put it down until she had read it cover to cover. She even requested that I buy one for one of he friends as a birthday gift, which I promptly did. As an aside, my daughter wears glasses and was so amused by the fact that Marley has multiple pairs in several colors. She thinks Marley is the coolest! Well done Marley and parents!!
Great and inspirational book. This is more directed to teens though and is like a self-help book. (Note that Marley Dias recomends using social media as a tool to start activism.) Almost like a magizne the pages are filled with beautiful colors and pictures that pop out at you. Marley Dias has created a beautiful book, that will inspire others
Not just for black girls, this optimistic, forward reaching book is a fine example of seeing a problem, imaging a solution and working to a positive outcome. That the person showing us how it's done is a young black girl is a positive role model for other girls of color does not make this book any less valuable to anyone interested in social activism.
